I’m just back from a 7 day fitness holiday and I feel amazing! This is the second fitness holiday I’ve been on and I’m really becoming addicted to them! This trip took me down to the beautiful Parknasilla Resort in Kerry to take part in Pure Results Bootcamp by Kathryn Thomas. I’ve had my eye on doing one of their week long bootcamps but just never had the time to do it. Lying awake one night a few weeks ago I decided I wanted to go on a fitness holiday of some sort and just booked the week long bootcamp. This year it’s all about looking after my health and more about me. I had a health scare back in November and it’s taught me a lot about my body and how powerful it is and the importance of looking after it.
Now let’s get onto what the bootcamp was like! Throughout the week while I was away I got a lot of questions about what was the bootcamp like so I’ve decided to write this post in a Q&A style adding in my own learnings from the week. Before I start I want to let you know that I paid for the bootcamp myself and all of the answers are my own opinion based on my week at Pure Results Bootcamp. Right let’s answer some of those burning questions about the Pure Results Bootcamp!
Who do I think would suit this bootcamp:
This bootcamp is for lots of different types of people. For me, it was about becoming fitter, improving my nutrition and diet and losing weight. There were several mums on the bootcamp, new mums after having a baby and mums who wanted a week to themselves kids free. If you have a stressful job and want a week away where you want to focus on yourself and feel better for going back to work I think you would love the bootcamp. Some people just wanted head space and other just wanted to workout and have fun.
My advice to anyone thinking of going is just know this isn’t a week away to relax and do nothing, you will get to relax but you will be working hard every single day to achieve the results that you wanted in the first place. It also doesn’t matter what size you are this bootcamp had ladies of all shapes and sizes so don’t feel you need to look a certain way to go. There wasn’t any men on our bootcamp but there has been at other camps so might be a perfect ideal for bringing the other half.
What age is the bootcamp for:
It’s not about age, it’s attitude. There was a total mixture of ages going from 25-55+ and I honestly don’t think it matters what age you are. You need to want to go on the bootcamp and have the attitude that you are going to give it your all, try the new food, meet new people and be open minded towards everything. Go to the bootcamp with a goal in mind. It could be to lose weight, to spend a week off your phone, to meet new people, to fall in love with exercise again, to become more educated in nutrition.
How fit do I need to be to go on the bootcamp:
The level of fitness was so varied on our bootcamp and some people were better at activities than others. What I did was as soon as I had the bootcamp booked I went to the gym the next day and did a spinning class. The classes vary in intensity so you do need some level of fitness. You don’t have to be super fit but just try to be active before doing the bootcamp or your body will be in shock! I recently bought a Fitbit watch and it really motivates you to get up and keep moving as it tracks the amount of steps you have done each day.
Can I go on my own or should I bring a friend:
Being honest, go on your own! There were a lot of people in the group on their own and everyone mixed really well, there are so many opportunities to get to know new people and hear about their life experiences. In saying that, a few did bring friends. My advice is if you are going to bring a friend, bring the friend that gives you motivation and makes you feel good because it’s a long week to be glued at the hips!
What is the food like:
The food was amazing! The flavours are incredible and I wish I could cook everything we had at home, with some practice I’m sure I will! You feel like Beyonce as your have your own chef, yes I said it, you don’t have to cook anything all week! Before you go on the bootcamp they will give you the option to go on weight loss or maintenance and this will determine the amount of food you get. Not going to lie, the portions are small but they are the correct portion sizes for someone on 1400 calories a day. They broke the meals into breakfast, snack, lunch, snack and dinner. You’re not allowed any caffeine on the camp and I’m really trying not to have any now that I’m home because I feel good without it. The nutritionist really supports you when it comes to cutting out caffeine and is on hand to help you at any stage. The week before you arrive they try to get you to cut out on caffeine so you don’t suffer major withdrawals, we all love our coffee! I’ve included some pictures of the food we ate below and they cater for all types of eaters, so don’t worry if you’re a fussy eater. You’ll be given a questionnaire before you come down all about your diet and what you like and don’t like to eat.
How hard are the workouts:
The workouts are broken into two categories; blue and red. Blue workouts are more core and stretching type exercises and the red ones are the tough ones. I have to say I loved every workout we did, even on the hard days! We usually started off the day with a trail run/walk or aqua aerobics which was so much fun! Everyday you have a boxercise class which had to be my favourite, the trainers made the class so much fun and you always got to work with a partner which made it even better! During some of the workouts you will say to yourself ‘this is soooo hard’ and ‘why am I doing this to myself’ but they are worth it! When you are struggling the trainers are there to help you and encourage you to keep going which you need. The trainers on this bootcamp are incredible and the energy they brought to each class made the bootcamp so good.
What does a typical day look like:
I’ve included pictures of what our schedule looked like over a few days. They mixed things up for us and included two lovely hikes so you get to see more of the beautiful surroundings. There were several talks throughout the week on nutrition and mindful eating which I found very interesting.
How much weight did you lose:
I lost half a stone over the course of the week and I was delighted with that result! They weigh you on your first day and take measurements so you can see on your last day how much you lost and where from. Everyone is completely different and it’s not all about the weight loss. I never skipped a class and really gave everything my best effort so I really am delighted to have lost weight. I’ve been trying to lose weight for a while now and realise I was doing everything wrong!
What did you learn the most from the week away:
Nutrition and portion sizes was the biggest learning point I took away from the week. I was doing this totally wrong and I now know that’s why I wasn’t losing weight. Sure sometimes I was having a dinner 3 times bigger than what I should have been eating! On your first day you sit down with the nutritionist to discuss your eating habits and where you could improve. Within a few moments of meeting me, Jen the nutritionist just got me and was able to help with where I was going wrong. I had a bad relationship with food before this and being on the bootcamp for a full week really helped me understand where I needed to improve and also where I had to cut down on. My snacking was crazy and totally out of proportion and I’m just really happy that I was able to take the knowledge home and practice it throughout the week with their guidance.
What is the accommodation like:
What they try to do on the camps is stay in self catering lodges on the grounds of the hotel. This way you are sharing a house with fellow bootcamppers and it makes it easier for them to cook all your meals. Unfortunately you won’t get to eat in the hotels restaurant but you can save that for another time. We had full use of the hotel and all the facilities including the spa. I’d recommend to take full advantage of that and pack at least 2 pairs of togs. I went to the pool every single day.
The big question, what should I pack:
Get out that big suitcase because you will need it! They will give you a checklist but I’m going to give you a little more detail. Bring loads of gym gear, it honestly will be the only thing you wear all week and make sure you are comfy in it. You don’t need to buy new gear so just head to Penneys, H&M or Dunnes Stores if you don’t have much. With all the exercise you’ll do you will be changing a lot. Bring a supportive sports bra, maybe 2/3 if you have them as there is a lot of jumping around and you don’t want to knock someones eye out! I brought 2 coat; 1 was used for the walks and hikes and another was a rain sheet style coat. I brought a few jumpers as they are so handy to layer up, especially if you get cold easily. 3 pairs of runners, I know I know but you will thank me when you have wet feet! As many pairs of socks as you can fit in your suitcase. Do bring your iPad, books or whatever you like for the evening times as you do have time to chill out after 7pm before bed. Also bring all you’re favourite toiletries as you are away for a full week and you want to feel at home.
What shouldn’t I pack:
Leave those heels behind ladies, you’re at bootcamp now! No need for anything dressy, everyone usually wore gym gear to all the meals. On the last night we all put some makeup on (you won’t be bothered wearing it during the week) and some normal clothes that we travelled down in.
What price is the bootcamp:
The weekend bootcamp (2 Full days / 1 Night) start from €359 and the week long bootcamp (7 Full days / 7 Night) from €1099. You do have to pay extra if you want a room on your own. The day tripper rate would be all the aspects of our retreat for the week without any accommodation included which is €699 for the 7 day bootcamp.
