We had our first experience of staying in a Casa Particular while we were in Trinidad. A Casa to those that don’t know is like a B&B, or a home stay. A Casa in Cuba will cost from 20 to 40 CUC (convertible pesos) per room per night depending on the area of Cuba you are in. Before going on your trip to Cuba I recommend having a note book with addresses of Casa’s in city’s that you will visit. This came in handy for us as one of our Casa bookings fell through. Many of the Casa Particular can be found on Tripadvisor or on Cuba-Junky. All Casa’s will have a sign above them like in the picture below.
We stayed in Casa ‘El Caribe’ while in Trinidad. Our hosts Ada and Maykel were just amazing, they made us love Trinidad even more. They have two bedrooms for guests which is perfect for those travelling as a group or a family. They made us feel so welcome and their Casa had so much character. What really made us love the whole experience was that we got to improve our Spanish. They had limited English so it meant we had to speak Spanish. They were so patient with us that by the end of our stay we didn’t need our phrase book just as much! We even had our own balcony overlooking the streets of Trinidad. We paid an extra 4 CUC each for breakfast each morning which consisted of bread, fruit and eggs. It was so delicious. You can book into our this Casa here on Cuba-Junky.
We only stayed in two Casa’s while in Cuba. Our second did not run as smoothly as our first. We had booked a Casa in Havana but had not paid for it and when we arrived they never answered the door. We told them the time we would arrived and they spoke good English, but alas it didn’t work out for us. Luckily being the super organised person that I am, I had addresses of other Casa’s in my note book. We got a bike taxi to the address and the owner of the Casa was able to give us a room. He was so welcoming and understanding when we told him what had happened.
